Deer Valley buys
Solitude Mountain Resort

Deal follows the recent Vail Resorts' $182.5M
purchase of Park City Mountain Resort.

Deer Valley Resort is buying Solitude Mountain Resort and will take over its operations this May — the second major shift in Utah's ski industry in weeks.

The purchase was a private acquisition and a news release about the deal does not disclose how much Deer Valley paid.

Interiors

Just the Right Fit.

Sometimes it's hard to find that piece of furniture that fits your space just right. You maybe can't find the right size or you may just not be finding what you want exactly. An option that we use all of the time is having custom pieces created specifically for the home. In this picture you will notice a large, raw steel mirror. This mirror was inspired by another piece in a magazine that we modified and made bigger so that it would fit this large foyer area.

You will also notice the custom made bench that we have for people to sit on and take off their shoes. We chose a natural log and added the acrylic legs for a contemporary flair. We then had just the top and sides finished in a black stain, leaving the raw outer log alone. So if you have a piece of furniture in mind, we can help you create that one of a kind piece.

Solar Shingles: Get Solar Power Without Changing Your Roof Line

Thin-film solar cells can serve double duty as roof shingles.

Solar shingles are a new way of getting electricity out of your roof. Thin-film photovoltaic cells are being designed to double as roof shingles, thus turning sunlight into electricity that can power your home or be sold back to your utility company.

14 Best Practices In High-Performance Home Design

1. Get the input of architects, trade partners, suppliers, and other decision-makers while the project is still in the design phase.

2. Whenever possible, site the home to take advantage of southern exposure on the rear, with fewer penetrations on the north side. Use roof overhangs and deep porches to help reduce solar gain.

3. Design according to a 2-foot module to accommodate common sheet-good sizes.

4. Over-designed foundations are a waste of concrete and wood. Determine the correct number and size of footings ahead of time.

5. Apply advanced framing techniques to reduce the amount of wood in the house. Don't use 10 studs when two will do.

6. Right-size HVAC equipment. Many systems are much larger than they need to be.

7. Take advantage of prevailing breezes and cross-ventilation to reduce the load on mechanical cooling systems.

8. Choose the most energy-efficient windows your budget allows. Make sure they're flashed and sealed properly.

9. Seal all ductwork and openings in the building envelope.

10. Maximize the insulating capacity of the thermal envelope. In other words, get the best R-value you can for the money.

11. Avoid ductwork in unconditioned spaces, such as attics.

12. Reuse and recycle building materials.

13. Test your homes regularly to monitor energy performance and identify opportunities for improvement.

14. Ensure that the home is ready for alternative technologies that the homeowner may want to add in the future. For example, pre-wire the home for a solar photovoltaic system.

Testimonial

“I really can't say enough good things about Scott and Richard. Thoughtful and comprehensive design skills to really customize the homes they built for us. Classy yet current taste that exudes warmth and style in nearly every single feature. No short cuts taken. Intense, ever watchful and insight construction management. Would I recommend them or use them again? You bet: they've built two houses for us, remodeled a third. But then when a freak flood nearly wiped out our Deer Valley home and all the possessions, even before I got the first call, it was Richard and Scott who were both on site calling in the disaster recovery and protecting our investments. And of course, in their talented and caring hands they brought our home back to a new and even better life. I've built or remodeled a total of nine homes...Scott and Richard are the best team I've ever had.”
