Housing Starts,
Permits Surge Last Month

Nationwide production and permitting of new homes rose sharply in September to their highest levels in more than four years, according to government figures released on October 17.

Moreover, the gains were registered across both the single-family and multifamily sectors, as well as most parts of the country. While starts rose 15% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 872,000 units, permits rose 11.6% to 894,000 units. Single-family starts registered an 11% gain to 603,000 units (their best pace since August 2008) and multifamily starts registered a 25.1% gain to 269,000 units (their best pace since September of 2008).

Interiors

This Home can be Described in a Number of Ways.

We've used elements that are industrial, mountain, contemporary and rustic and combined them to create a cohesive space.

The raw steel reflects the mining history of Park City. The sharp lines of the stairs are very clean and contemporary. In a very angular home, we've introduced softness with the use of the airy white drapery and the curving lines of the piano. The art work aligns the movement in the space and adds a refreshing pop of color.

While there are many ways to reduce that footprint, without clear rules defining how to measure the impacts, it's tricky to track progress or provide incentives. Carbon Leadership Forum's new “product category rule” (PCR) for concrete will help.

Going Green with Air Conditioning and Alternatives

by Marcus Pickett

When it comes to systems in your home that are decidedly un-green, air conditioning ranks pretty near the top of the list. According to the Rocky Mountain Institute, air conditioning accounts for nearly 50 percent of the energy use in the United States during peak summer months, and air conditioning is responsible for nearly 100 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. That said, green air conditioning is available for homeowners who wish to reduce their carbon footprint without sweltering away during the summer months.
